Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project
Summer 2025

What's New

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), affectionately known as Chessie, completed her mission of excavating the new tunnel at Thimble Shoal Channel in late January 2025.

After months of hard work, the massive machine has been fully disassembled and removed—a process that took about three months. While some parts of the TBM will be reused on other projects, most of the machine will be recycled.

Work is also underway to remove the two temporary steel trestles—one at each island—that were vital enabling structures for the TBM’s passage. In the coming weeks, the large gantry crane on One Island will also be dismantled. Significant preparatory work was required to allow Chessie to carry out tunnel excavation operations.

Since the TBM’s breakthrough in late January, the contractor, CTJV, has been placing ballast inside the tunnel. This heavy material not only prevents the concrete tunnel from floating, but also forms the foundation for the future tunnel roadway.

Simultaneously, crews are installing electrical and communication conduits along the western wall of the tunnel. These systems are essential for operating and maintaining the tunnel safely for years to come.

CTJV is continuing to complete the portal wall and the island works.
