Tunnel Equipment Maintainer

Introduction:

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District will be accepting applications for a Tunnel Equipment Maintainer until July 26, 2024.  A Tunnel Equipment Maintainer performs responsible semi-skilled work inspecting, monitoring and maintaining tunnel equipment and operations and does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Tunnel Equipment Operator.  The position requires rotating shifts which includes, but is not limited to, working on the weekends and Holidays.

Applicant must be 18 years of age or older, must have a good driving record, and must possess a Virginia Driver’s License.  

This is a full time position with a salary range of $38,076.00 to $58,113.00 and includes a complete benefits package.

General Definition and Conditions of Work:

Performs responsible semiskilled work inspecting, monitoring and maintaining tunnel equipment and operations; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Tunnel Equipment Operator.

 

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

  • Inspecting and monitoring tunnel equipment operations; maintaining and cleaning workstations and control room; preparing and maintaining operation records.
  • Inspects and monitors the operations of ventilation fans, electric motors, pumps, air compressors, generators, transformers, battery chargers, boilers and other tunnel equipment;
  • Reports operation problems to equipment operators and/or makes repairs or adjustments as qualified and capable;
  • Checks water, wastewater and drainage systems for proper operations;
  • Checks navigational aid lights and horns for proper operations;
  • Tests and records specific gravity readings and electrolyte levels at battery stations;
  • Responds to emergency alarms; makes adjustments and repairs as necessary;
  • Maintains log and checks emergency generator operations during power outages;
  • Cleans, maintains and fuels automotive equipment;
  • Cleans workstations, control room, stairs, bathrooms and equipment areas;
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of bridge, tunnel and island facilities;
  • This position requires employees to work outside, and potentially in excess of, normally scheduled hours in response to District needs, including but not limited to, accidents, incidents and/or weather events.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

General knowledge of the operational characteristics of tunnel ventilation, drainage and related equipment; ability to detect and analyze improper operations or problems; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to prepare and maintain simple records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.  The position requires the individual to work rotating shifts, including but not limited to, weekend shifts.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

Special Requirements:

Statutory drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment and employee)
