Demolition Work to Begin in Preparation for the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel

While much of the work being performed on the parallel tunnel at Thimble Shoal Channel is not visible to the traveling public, travelers will soon see some minor traffic changes.

Beginning Monday, September 23, the maximum safe speed for travel in Thimble Shoal Channel Tunnel will be reduced to 45 mph, as CTJV, the contractor for the construction of the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel, alters the traffic pattern in preparation to demolish a portion of the open approach walls adjacent to the southbound roadway.

Work will begin adjacent to the southbound lane of #1 Island as contractors place a concrete barrier adjacent to the existing open approach wall.  Once the barrier is in place, demolition will begin on the existing wall.  All demolition work will occur at night while road lane closures are in place.

Once work is complete on #1 Island, CTJV will transfer to #2 Island to perform the same work on the west open approach wall adjacent to the southbound lane of traffic.
