CAPE CHARLES, VA – The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Commission voted today, at its February 12, 2013 meeting, to begin the process of implementing a commuter toll for Class 1 vehicles. The new $5 one-way rate will be available to users that make 30 one-way trips across the facility within a 30-day period and that use the E-Z Pass system for paying tolls. Class 1 vehicles are two-axle, four-tire vehicles including passenger cars, pick-up trucks, panel trucks, station wagons, minivans with 15 or less seating capacity, and also includes motorcycles.
Also at today’s meeting, the Commission voted that all toll discounts, including the 24-hour round trip discount and the new commuter discount, will be available for E-Z Pass users only. To assist users with this change in the toll discounting methodology, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will have retail E-Z Pass transponder packs available for purchase at the Administration office. The retail packs will be available by summer 2013.
Additionally, the Commission also voted to decrease the rate for all school buses to $1 each way. This discount will apply to school buses as defined by the Code of Virginia, to also include any color of bus that is used for school purposes.
While a specific implementation date was not approved, the Commission members agreed that all of these changes will not be effective until the Commission has held public information sessions to acquaint the public with the revised toll schedule, the new discount methodology and has completed the required hardware and software modifications to the toll collection system.
The process of modifying the CBBT’s toll collection system was approved at the Commission’s January meeting with an expected completion timeline of 10-12 months. As a result, it is expected that the new toll schedule will be implemented by January 1, 2014.
