chesapeake bay bridge-tunnel awards project for the installation of an electronic toll collection system

CAPE CHARLES, VA – The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District has selected TRMI Systems Integration of Accord, NY to perform the installation of an Electronic Toll Collection System at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.  TRMI Systems Integration was selected after an eight month competitive negotiation procurement process.

TRMI has been producing toll collection equipment since the 1970s for both public and private organizations, including the design and installation of the first ETC system in the United States at the Golden Gate Bridge.  They have since installed systems from Norway to Australia, thus providing them with a wide base of experience and knowledge of all facets and objectives of toll collection.

This new toll system will accommodate motorists by accepting both Smart Tag and E-Z Pass.  The current toll schedule with the round trip discount will still apply.  Additionally, the system will be flexible enough to incorporate any new emerging technologies.

"With the implementation of an electronic toll collection system, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will be able to provide a greater payment convenience to its customers in addition to increasing the throughput capacity at the toll plazas," stated Jeff Holland, Executive Director for the District.

An aggressive timeline has been established and the entire system is expected to be complete by the late fall of this year.  Customers who are interested in using electronic toll collection will be able to join the program just prior to the completion of the project.  For updates regarding electronic toll collection, visit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel's  website at www.cbbt.com.
