VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.  – The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) have joined forces to encourage the public to assist in the effort to “Save The Bay.”  As part of the initiative, new signs are being erected to remind travelers of the importance of restoring the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

The new signs are located near the gift shop and fishing pier on the CBBT’s southernmost island and at the scenic overlook on the Eastern Shore side of the facility.  The signs include a map of the Chesapeake Bay’s six-state watershed and educate viewers on the fragile state of the bay’s tidal ecosystem that is fed by more than 44 tributary rivers and home to more than 3,600 plant and animal species.  Additionally, the sign near the island gift shop and fishing pier features a large blue crab with a cutout that allows travelers to insert their heads and take whimsical photographs.

“The CBBT’s unique location at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay provides a special opportunity to assist the Chesapeake Bay Foundation with their mission to improve the quality of life for the people of our region.  We hope the message shared on these two signs, when coupled with the spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay, will inspire travelers to take up the cause of restoring the health of the Bay,” said Jeff Holland, Executive Director of the CBBT.

“The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is tremendously excited that millions of travelers will now be able to learn about this national treasure as they travel across it,” said Ann F. Jennings, CBF Virginia Executive Director. “The more people who know about the Bay, the more people will demand its restoration and protection. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Commission is to be commended for its commitment to Bay education.”
